Carnegie Hall, through Peacock Cinema in Dunfermline, hosted this week the powerful premiere of TAPPED, a youth-led short film that tackles the often hidden world of illegal moneylending and debt. The screening brought together young filmmakers, actors, community partners and supporters for an evening that was as thought-provoking as it was emotionally charged.

The project showcases what can happen when local creativity, professional mentorship and community organisations come together around a shared purpose. It also underscores how storytelling can raise awareness and encourage people to seek support.

A powerful story with real-world resonance

TAPPED follows four interwoven lives: a middle-aged man on the brink of despair, a young mother struggling to provide, a teenager overwhelmed by debt-fuelled pressure and a community worker carrying the financial scars of her own family history. All four are drawn into the orbit of a charismatic but predatory illegal money lender, whose “help” comes at a devastating price.

The characters feel uncomfortably familiar. They are not distant, fictional archetypes but the kind of people we all recognise from our own streets, workplaces and social circles. The film captures how quickly financial stress can escalate and how shame, fear and silence create the perfect conditions for exploitation.

Crucially, TAPPED doesn’t stop at despair. It also points to support, hope, and the importance of reaching out before things spiral out of control.

• Moira Shearer was born Moira Shearer King at Morton Lodge next to The Public Park, Dunfermline, on 17 January 1926, and later attended Dunfermline High School before her family moved and she continued her education near Glasgow.​

• Early years in what was then Northern Rhodesia brought her first serious ballet lessons, but it was a move to London and a place at the Sadler’s Wells school at 14 that launched her towards the front rank of British ballet.​

• By her late teens, she was dancing leading roles with the Sadler’s Wells company, making a mark in works such as “The Sleeping Beauty”, “Swan Lake”, “Coppélia” and Ashton’s “Symphonic Variations”.​

• Her poise, musicality and distinctive red hair made her a natural star at Covent Garden, but it was cinema that turned her into a global icon.​

  

  The Red Shoes and beyond

• Shearer’s performance as Victoria Page in Powell and Pressburger’s “The Red Shoes” (1948) became one of the most influential screen portrayals of a ballerina, introducing ballet to vast new audiences and inspiring countless future dancers.​

• The film’s blend of melodrama and dance made a Dunfermline‑born ballerina the public image of ballet for post‑war cinema‑goers around the world.​​

• She followed with roles in “The Tales of Hoffmann” and other stage and screen work, while also writing and broadcasting about dance, helping to explain ballet in accessible language to non‑specialist audiences.​

• In doing so, she broadened ballet’s reach far beyond the opera house, proving that a classical dancer could straddle high art and popular culture without sacrificing artistic seriousness.​

Kenneth MacMillan: Dunfermline’s radical storyteller

• Kenneth MacMillan was born in Dunfermline, Fife, on 11 December 1929, the youngest of four surviving children of William and Edith MacMillan, before the family later moved to Great Yarmouth in search of work.​

• His childhood was marked by poverty and the early death of his mother, experiences that fed into the psychological darkness and emotional intensity of many of his later ballets.​

• Evacuated during the Second World War, he discovered ballet as a teenager in Retford; already a keen tap‑dancer, he switched focus and, aged 15, secured a scholarship to Sadler’s Wells Ballet School after audaciously forging a letter from his father to request an audition.​

• Stage fright curtailed his performing career, pushing him decisively towards choreography, where he quickly emerged as one of the leading creative voices of his generation.​

• MacMillan’s breakthrough works in the 1950s and 60s, including “The Invitation”, “The Rite of Spring”, “Song of the Earth”, and his hugely popular “Romeo and Juliet”, reshaped narrative ballet by tackling adult themes and giving dancers dramatically complex characters to inhabit.​

• He challenged genteel notions of ballet by staging scenes of sexual violence, political repression and psychological trauma, insisting that classical technique could carry the weight of modern drama.​

• As Director of The Royal Ballet in the 1970s, he both created major three‑act works such as “Manon” and “Mayerling” and broadened the repertory by inviting choreographers like Balanchine, Robbins and Tetley, permanently expanding what British ballet audiences expected to see.​

• His ballets remain central to repertoires worldwide, meaning that a choreographer born in Dunfermline continues to shape how companies from London to Paris tell stories in dance.​

  

Robin Anderson: building a Scottish national company

• Robin Anderson was born in Dunfermline in 1931 and attended Canmore Primary and Dunfermline High School before a serious childhood cycling accident led to ice‑skating as physiotherapy.​

• He became Scottish figure‑skating champion while training as a pharmacist, but earlier injuries ultimately blocked a full‑time performing career and he spent years working in pharmacy in London and Edinburgh.

• A change of direction came via an Arts Council bursary and a move into arts management, leading to his appointment as Administrator, and later General Administrator, of Scottish Theatre Ballet, soon renamed Scottish Ballet, in the early 1970s.​

• Working alongside artistic director Peter Darrell, Anderson’s brief was to integrate the company into the artistic life of Scotland and to establish it as an internationally recognised ballet company rather than a regional troupe.​

Putting Scottish Ballet on the map

• Anderson helped shape the company’s touring, repertoire and partnerships, inviting guest choreographers and expanding classic works so that Scottish audiences could see world‑class ballet at home while international audiences learned to associate Scotland with serious dance.​

• Under his watch, Scottish Ballet undertook ambitious foreign tours and collaborations that raised its profile and gave Scottish dancers experience on major stages abroad.​

For anyone from Dunfermline, Scotland, US connections start with Andrew Carnegie, the weaver’s son who left the town as a child, arrived in the United States with very little, and became one of the richest industrialists – and most prolific philanthropists – the world has ever seen. Carnegie’s money helped build more than 2,500 public libraries worldwide and endowed institutions from Carnegie Hall in New York to the Peace Palace in The Hague, yet he never stopped calling Dunfermline his “dear old home.”​

Back in Dunfermline, his legacy is written into the fabric of everyday life: the humble Birthplace Museum, the gift of Pittencrieff Park “The Glen” to the people, the leisure centre and halls that grew from his determination that working people should have access to education, culture and fresh air. Carnegie’s story is, at heart, a transatlantic tale – Scottish in its origins, American in its scale and ambition, and global in its consequences.​

A general, a road, and a new city

Carnegie is not the only Dunfermline-linked figure to reshape the American map. Brigadier General John Forbes, a Scottish officer who fought in the Seven Years’ War, led the 1758 expedition that seized the French fort of Duquesne and laid out a new British position at the forks of the Ohio River. Forbes chose to name the settlement “Pittsburgh,” establishing both the city and the strategic route known as Forbes Road that cut through Pennsylvania’s difficult terrain.​

Less discussed, but just as important, is how Forbes approached alliance-building. Severely ill and carried in a litter for much of the campaign, he nevertheless devoted energy to diplomacy with Native American nations, helping shift the balance of power in the region and showing that military success could not be separated from political relationships on the ground. For a modern Scotland thinking about soft power and respectful partnership, his story feels uncomfortably contemporary.​

The Scots who took golf to America

If Forbes and Carnegie represent steel, strategy and philanthropy, Dunfermline’s John Reid and Robert Lockhart bring a different kind of influence: leisure, identity and the small rituals that become global industries. Emigrating to the United States in the late nineteenth century, they missed their regular games of golf so much that they improvised a course in an orchard and then on a cow field, introducing American friends to a game that was still very much a Scottish export.​

In 1888, Reid and Lockhart helped found The Saint Andrew’s Golf Club in New York, widely recognised as the first golf club in the USA, with Reid remembered as the “Grandfather of American Golf.” He even exported the tradition of the “19th hole,” persuading his companions that a round of golf was not complete without time set aside to talk it over with a drink – a tiny cultural detail that says a lot about how Scots carried not just skills but social customs across the Atlantic.​

More than a shared past

What links Carnegie’s libraries, Forbes’ military road and Reid’s orchard golf is not nostalgia, but a pattern: people from Scottish towns and cities who went to America and altered its landscape, economy and culture, while staying tethered – emotionally and often financially – to the places they left behind. Their legacies remind Dunfermline that it is not a peripheral town gazing wistfully westward, but a place whose choices and characters have helped shape what the United States became.​

This year marks a truly extraordinary milestone in international friendship - the 80th anniversary of the twinning between Dunfermline and Trondheim, one of the oldest and most enduring civic partnerships in Europe. What began as a gesture of post-war solidarity in 1945 has blossomed into a profound cultural and historical bond that continues to thrive today. Tomorrow will see us celebrating this connection with the digging up of a time capsule buried 25 years ago, and a civic reception hosted by Provost Leishman. Representatives from Trondheim will also attend this.

Origins in Wartime Solidarity

The story of this remarkable twinning begins against the backdrop of World War II and its immediate aftermath. In May 1945, as Europe emerged from the devastation of war, an extraordinary ceremony took place in Dunfermline that would forge lasting ties with Norway. The Bond of Friendship was established during a ceremony attended by Norwegian sailors based at Rosyth. This naval base had served as a crucial hub for Norwegian naval operations throughout the war.

The timing was significant - just as victory was declared in Europe, with Crown Prince Olav sailing from Rosyth back to Oslo on HMS Devonshire on 11 May 1945, the same ship that had brought the Norwegian royal family to the UK during the war. Born in Glasgow on February 28, 1955, Calderwood had a successful career both as a player and manager. He debuted for Birmingham City in 1972 and spent a number of years playing in The Dutch League before moving into coaching.

After leaving Dunfermline in 2004, Calderwood went on to manage Aberdeen, where he continued to find success.

His career was unfortunately cut short due to his diagnosis of early-onset dementia in 2017.

A proud alumnus of St Columba’s High School has reached a remarkable milestone in his naval career. Former pupil Paul Hannigan has been promoted to Captain in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and now commands HMAS Albatross, the RAN’s prestigious Naval Air Station located on the picturesque South Coast of New South Wales.

Captain Hannigan’s journey began in September 1989 when he entered Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, following his graduation from Napier Polytechnic, Edinburgh, with an engineering degree. His career took flight—quite literally—when he earned his Royal Navy pilot wings in July 1991.

For 17 years, he served as a helicopter pilot in the Royal Navy, seeing operational service in Northern Ireland, the Former Yugoslavia, and Iraq. However, in 2006, Captain Hannigan made a bold move, emigrating to Australia with his wife and three daughters to join the Royal Australian Navy.

Since then, he has held several key positions as a naval aviator, but one of his most notable achievements came during the catastrophic 2019-2020 bushfires that devastated much of New South Wales’ South Coast. As Commanding Officer of 808 Squadron, Captain Hannigan led operations with the MRH90 Taipan helicopter, providing vital support to the community in a time of crisis.

Now, his promotion to Captain and appointment to HMAS Albatross mark a crowning achievement in a career that spans over 36 years. Known for his inclusive and decisive leadership style, Captain Hannigan has earned the admiration of his peers and inspires all those under his command.

Despite his years abroad, Captain Hannigan remains connected to his roots in Dunfermline. He maintains a close friendship with his best friend from school, Michael Dignan, who now lives in Crossgates with his wife, Catherine.

Captain Hannigan’s inspiring story, from his school days at St Columba’s to commanding one of Australia’s key naval bases, is a testament to hard work and perseverance. His story is a source of pride for the Dunfermline community and an inspiration for future generations.

A Changing World

The past six decades have witnessed remarkable transformations in technology, society, and global affairs. When I was born, the space race was beginning, and now we have rovers exploring Mars. The internet, smartphones, and social media have revolutionised how we communicate and access information. Climate change has emerged as a pressing global concern, reshaping our relationship with the environment.

Dunfermline: A Town in Transition

With its rich history dating back to medieval times, Dunfermline has also seen significant changes over those years. The town's industrial landscape has shifted dramatically since my childhood. Once a thriving centre for coal mining and textile production, Dunfermline has adapted to the changing economic tides. The closure of many traditional industries led to challenging times, but Dunfermline has shown remarkable resilience. New businesses and sectors have emerged, breathing fresh life into the local economy. The expansion of nearby Edinburgh has also influenced Dunfermline's development, with many residents now commuting to the capital for work.

A busy place, 1960s

Cultural Renaissance

One of the most heartening changes I've witnessed is the cultural renaissance in Dunfermline. The Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries opening in 2017 marked a significant milestone, celebrating the town's heritage while providing a modern cultural hub. The annual Outwith Festival, which has launched in recent years, has further invigorated the local arts scene. Of course, the return of The Bruce Festival, which we organised, was a tremendous success, which we will continue to build upon in the coming years. Fire Station Creative is a place I hold dear to my heart as I was involved in setting it up, and it has been a delight to see it have a bit of a renaissance in recent times, mainly due to a change in management and venues such as The Alhambra and PJ Malloys continue to attract great acts. Whilst it remains to be seen how the recent city status given to Dunfermline will change things for the better, I can tell you that there is no shortage of ideas and willing bodies to put those projects into practice.

Personal Reflections

As I enter my seventh decade, I find myself in a place of reflection and anticipation. Like many of my generation, I'm transitioning from middle age to what society often labels as "old age". However, I prefer to think of this new chapter as the "Savour-it Sixties" – a time to cherish experiences, deepen relationships, and perhaps pursue long-held dreams. My perspective on life has undoubtedly shifted over the years. The urgency of youth has given way to a more measured approach, and I find myself valuing quality over quantity in many aspects of life. Yet, there's still a spark of excitement for what lies ahead. Looking back on the changes that have shaped my life and hometown, I’m filled with gratitude and wonder. Dunfermline, like me, has weathered challenges and embraced opportunities. As we both enter this new chapter, I'm eager to see what the future holds for myself and the place that has been the backdrop to so much of my life's story.

The recent success of the Bruce Festival in Dunfermline has emerged as a shining example of how local organisations, such as Visit Dunfermline, can profoundly enrich community life and spur beneficial change. The festival attracted between 16 and 18,000 people over the weekend of 1st and 2nd June. The sun shone for us, and visitors had a wonderful time.
